Her research is such that even Stephen Schwartz, whose extraordinary career was launched by writing the show's music, says in his Foreword that she discovered details that he himself had never known before. de Giere has done a remarkable job of reminding us what makes GODSPELL unique. I highly recommend this book for Godspell fans and musical theatre aficionados. It provides insight and context for the deeper meanings hidden within Godspell. Any person directing or performing in a production of “Godspell” should read this book. Unfortunately that is what most productions (including the recent failed Broadway Revival) have been doing to the show for the last 40 years. There is a quote in the book from Peggy Gordon, original cast member and composer of “By My Side” where she says that Tebelak was always telling the cast “never obscure, never upstage”. ![]() De Giere’s book provides background into Godspell creator and director John-Michael Tebelak’s motivations and process for his direction of the original “Godspell”. Too many groups turn it into a cross between a night at the improv and St. Godspell comes off as a simple little show, but is deceptively difficult show to pull off well. The book is full of historical information, but more importantly it provides information into the deeper meanings and workings of the musical “Godspell”. The book is a thorough examination of the creation of Schwartz’s first big hit show. Carol de Giere’s follow up to her first Schwartz related book, “Defying Gravity” is “The Godspell Experience”. I have been a fan of Stephen Schwartz for over 40 years and Godspell is my sentimental favorite of all of his shows.
